Advances in Bee Health virtual meeting

The Status of Pollinators in North America report released by the National Research Council in 2007 sounded the alarmâ the populations of pollinators upon which we depend on for ecological stability and agricultural productivity might be at risk. Events since then have proven the report to be all too prescient, with alarmingly losses and extinctions especially for bees, the most important pollinators on the planet. This session will highlight some of the latest advances in promoting bee health involving research on nutrition, microbiome, genomic-based breeding, nesting biology, social immunity, and landscape management. The webcast will be available at 11:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday, April 26. For more information: http://www.nasonline.org/about-nas/events/annual-meeting/nas157/science-sessions-bees.html

2020 European IUSSI meeting

The next European meeting of the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (EU-IUSSI) will be held in Toulouse, France, on 4-26 Aug 2020 at the University Paul Sabatier. We hope to fill this conference with many great talks and posters, and this will only be possible with contributions from symposium organizers. Therefore, we would like to announce that the call for symposia is now open.

Like for previous editions, the three days of conference will be organized with topic symposia and open sessions. We aim to cover a broad range of emerging as well as classical topics, and preference will be given to symposia that are not restricted to only one taxon. Each symposium should contain four invited talks (one long talk and three short). The sessions will then be completed with a number of non-invited talks (short) selected from the spontaneous abstract submissions. The length of long and short talks will be adjusted depending on the number of abstract submission received. If your symposium is accepted, you will commit to select speakers from the submitted abstracts and chair the session during the meeting.

The proposals will be evaluated by the scientific committee of the meeting, which contains representatives from all the active European sections of the IUSSI: Serge Aron, Cristina Castracani, Sylvia Cremer, Claire Detrain, Patrizia D’Ettore, Christoph Grüter, Juergen Heinze, Elli Leadbeater, Tom Wenseelers.

If you would like to organize a symposium, please send your proposal (symposium title, name and address of organizers, 300 word summary, names of invited speakers) before the 30th of September 2019 to mathieu.lihoreau@univ-tlse3.fr. It is highly recommended that the task is shared by at least two organizers, ideally from different institutes.

Biennial General Meeting, Andean-Caribbean Section of the IUSSI

The Andean-Caribbean Section of the IUSSI will meet in Quito, the capital of Ecuador on 5-9 August.  In previous years we have met in Colombia, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela, but never before in Ecuador, so we are very pleased to extend our geographic reach.

The third announcement and call for abstracts is found here  in Spanish.  I have never used the “translate this message” feature in e-mail and have no idea how well it works, so I will give you the main facts.

Your section members are all cordially invited to attend on the same basis as Andean-Caribbean members.  Our main working language is Spanish, but posters and talks in Portuguese and English are also welcome.

The venue is the National Polytechnical School (Escuela Politécnica Nacional).

Information on accommodation, registration fee — usually quite modest in our section — and the field trip will follow in further announcements.  If you have other questions, please direction them to section president David Donoso (david.donosov@gmail.com) or Chris Starr (ckstarr@gmail.com)

Did I mention that we will be meeting in the Neotropics?  Can you resist?

The Apimondia 2019 World Apicultural Congress in Montreal, Canada

Deadline for abstract submission is less than two weeks away!

The Apimondia 2019 world apicultural congress will be held in Montreal, Canada, from 8-12 September 2019.  It promises to be an amazing congress—with world class speakers, workshops, round-table discussions, vendors from throughout the world, tours, and other events.  It will be the largest beekeeping-related congress in North America of the decade. The website for the conference is:  http://www.apimondia2019.com

If you are interested in giving a presentation at the congress, the deadline to submit an abstract has just been extended to March 15th— if you have not submitted an abstract by then, it will not be possible to speak or present a poster at the conference.

On the main webpage, under the “Program” tab, select “Program Overview” and you can see the schedule and the wide range of topics of the sessions. If you scroll down on the home webpage, you can click on the red button labeled “Submit an Abstract” to get further instructions about how to submit your abstract.

This year is going to be a jam-packed week long session of intense teaching, field, and lab sessions about all aspects of termite biology, with a special focus on the ecology, evolution and symbiosis of termites.

This course is open to ALL (students, post docs, and faculties!) from all fields of study in social insects. We would love to share our love and experience of termites to our friends studying other social insect models.

This year is going to be very special as we will have guest speakers who will provide there unique perspective on various aspects of Termite Biology, which means we will have a total of 10 instructors, including:

Rudi Scheffrahn
Nan-Yao Su
Kenji Matsuura
Thomas Bourguignon
Jan Šobotník
William Kern
Tiago Carijo
Thomas Chouvenc

In addition, Graduate students who participate to this termite course will be given the opportunity to present their own work in a grad student mini-symposium organized during the event. The class is capped at 50 participants, and the registration is on a first come first serve basis. Finally, this course will be offered again only in 2021, so please make sure to not miss this opportunity if you are interested in joining us.

Weaving the Future of Animal Behavior (WFAB) workshops

A new professional-development opportunity for early-career animal behavior scientists
http://www.animalbehaviorsociety.org/web/embeded/WFAB_Opp.pdf

Our goal is to advance the future of animal behavior science by supporting and promoting the efforts of early-career professionals through workshops, symposia, and long-term, multi-level mentoring.

May 16-18, 2019 Symposium (We Ko Pa resort and Conference Center near Scottsdale, AZ): We begin our initiative with a 2.5-day professional development symposium consisting of panel discussions, activities, and peer mentoring circles. Symposium participants will be early-career animal behavior professionals, including pre-tenure faculty and advanced postdocs. We particularly encourage women and scientists from underrepresented groups in animal behavior to apply. Registration, lodging and travel expenses are covered by an award from the National Science Foundation (IOS-Animal Behavior program #1833455).
July 23-27, 2019 ABS Workshops (Chicago): With support from the Animal Behavior Society, we will also host 1-day workshops immediately before the ABS meetings, beginning on July 23 at the “Behaviour 2019″ conference in Chicago. With funding from both the ABS and NSF, we will be offering also travel awards to cover expenses for some participants.
