Research Areas: Honey bee biology, social physiology, nest architecture, collective behavior

See the complete advert here.

The Smith Bee Lab conducts research on the basic biology of honey bee colonies within a natural history context, focusing on colony organization, development, nest architecture, and collective behavior. For examples of our work, please visit our publications on Google Scholar.

Members of the Smith Bee Lab are encouraged to develop their own research programs within the broader framework of social physiology and colony form/function. Prior experience with honey bees is not required—we are actively seeking researchers with complementary skills, as long as they have a strong interest in the underlying biological concepts. Projects that develop methods, analytical tools, or bridge different research fields are especially welcome.

Graduate Students:
Auburn University supports a large community in its Department of Biological Sciences (DBS). We are only accepting students at the Ph.D. level. While prior experience working with honey bees is not required, a strong interest in the field is essential.

Application materials include:

  • CV
  • Personal statement
  • Official transcripts
  • Three letters of recommendation

Note: Auburn University does not require the GRE.

Prospective students will be interviewed in January 2025, with formal applications due to DBS by February 1st. Please note that all applicants must have a faculty sponsor before submitting an official application. If you are interested, contact me via email as soon as possible.
